The BC Government, together with MITACS (Mathematics of Information Technology and Complex Systems), UBC Okanagan, UNBC, and UVIC, and NGOs are hosting a BC Water Symposium on Aug 30th - Sept 1 in three locations concurrently across the province: Victoria, Kelowna, and Prince George. The objectives of the symposium are to discuss emerging issues pertinent to water science, to develop new collaborative relationships, and to work together to build the foundations for a Water Science Strategy (WSS) for BC. In addition, the symposium will expose participants to new ideas and initiatives by world class researchers and leaders and provide a venue for sharing local knowledge and its application to local issues.
The Water Science Strategy is a commitment made by the BC Government in Living Water Smart: BC's Water Plan. The intention is to facilitate a collaborative process with multiple partners to produce a tool that can be used by organizations across the province to bridge the gap between those that create and hold water related knowledge and those that apply this knowledge to make decisions, support policy development and create operational procedures. The process of developing a WSS will also help to create new partnerships and collaborations between information creators and information users.
Connected live, this event will be a mix of break-out discussions, plenary talks from both local and international experts, panel discussions networking breaks as well as a public lecture and poster receptions. There will also be an opportunity for those who cannot attend in person to participate via the web. Additional information on how to register can be found at: http://www.mitacs.ca/goto/bcwatersymposium
To All users of the Irrigation Scheduling Calculators:
If you have been recently using the calculator you may have noticed that it has been giving some erroneous results. The reason behind this is that the real time weather station feeds that are received by the application are not feeding all of the data required to calculate proper results. The forecast feed that comes from Environment Canada is not providing Tmin information on some dates which then generates incorrect evapotranspiration values. Some stations have also not been reporting precipitation data. This problem is being looked into and will be corrected as soon as possible.
You can check the station data at http://www.farmwest.com/ to determine if the station you have selected is providing all of the required data. You will also then be able to see which dates to avoid.
New Certified Irrigation Scheduler (CIS) Course
The IIABC has developed a new Certified Irrigation Scheduler course to teach skills for field technicians to quickly be able to observe and assess an irrigation system's operation and set up an efficient irrigation watering schedule. This course is NOT a Landscape Auditor Course. It will however provide skills to cost effectively improve irrigation systems water efficiency. The next course will take place at the IIABC annual Convention in November in Victoria.
The IIABC has developed a new Certified Irrigation Technician - Ag Level 2 course for those doing Agricultural irrigation system installation and maintenance work. The pre-requisite to this course is the CIT-Level 1 course. This course will appeal to those working on irrigation systems in plantings of a wide variety of agricultural crops such as vineyards, nurseries, tree fruits, field crops and so on. The inaugural course will be offered at the IIABC's Convention during the week of November 22-26, 2010 in Victoria, BC.
This guide has now been added to the website list of guides. To see the list of guides click Resource Page Scheduling Guides
The IIABC with funding from the Canada British Columbia National Water Supply Expansion Program has developed a new agriculture irrigation scheduling calculator. The calculator will determine an irrigation schedule for all types of agricultural irrigation systems and crop types. The IIABC has also upgraded the landscape irrigation scheduling calculator to follow the same format. The calculators use real time climate data from www.farmwest.com to determine an irrigation schedule and information on when to apply the next irrigation.
Users guides are being prepared that provide additional information and will assist users in selections made in the works tabs. Several User Guides have been prepared both for Landscape Sprinkler and various Agriculture Irrigation systems. A users guide for Landscape Drip is under development and will be added when completed. The users guides can be found under the Resources / Irrigation Scheduling Tab.
